AI interview practice means two different things now. You can use AI to practice for a normal interview, with a chatbot playing the hiring manager. Or you can practice for an interview where AI sits on the employer's side, like a one-way video interview you record alone in front of your laptop. Most people need both.

This guide covers both: a free mock interview setup with prompts you can copy, then how AI interviews actually work and how to prepare for one.

How to do AI interview practice for free, step by step

You don't need a paid app to start. ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can all run a solid mock interview if you set them up properly. The setup is the part most people skip, and it's why their practice feels generic.

Step 1: Give the AI the job and your background

Paste the job description and your resume, then tell the AI exactly how to behave. A prompt that works:

You are the hiring manager for the role below. Interview me the way a real interviewer would. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer before you ask the next one. Mix behavioral questions with questions about my resume. If an answer is vague, ask one follow-up question before moving on. Job description: [paste]. My resume: [paste].

One question at a time stops the AI from dumping a list of ten questions on you. The follow-up rule makes it act like a real person who digs into weak answers.

Step 2: Answer out loud, not in writing

Typing answers is not interview practice. In a real interview you have a couple of seconds to start talking, and you can't edit what you've said. Use a voice mode if your chatbot has one (ChatGPT's works on a free account, with usage limits). If you stick with text, answer out loud first and only then type a short version.

Step 3: Build four or five STAR stories

Behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time when...") are judged on whether you give a concrete example. The STAR method keeps you on track: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Before your session, prepare four or five stories: a conflict, a mistake, a tight deadline, a win you're proud of and a time you led without the title. Most behavioral questions can be answered with one of them.

A STAR answer can be short:

Our biggest client threatened to leave two weeks before renewal (Situation). I had to keep them (Task). I set up a call with our product team, and we fixed their top issue in a week (Action). They renewed for two more years (Result).

Step 4: Ask for a tough, scored review

Chatbots are polite by default. If you don't ask for honest feedback, you won't get it. After five or six questions, send this:

Now review all my answers. Score each one from 1 to 5 for structure, specific details and length. For every answer below 4, tell me exactly what was missing and show me a better version using only my own experience. Don't invent achievements I didn't mention.

The last line matters. Without it, the AI will happily write you a "better answer" built on numbers you never had, and you'll freeze when the interviewer asks about them.

Step 5: Record yourself once

The AI can't see you. Your phone can. Record one full answer on video and watch it twice: once with the sound off, once with it on. You'll spot the filler words, the slow start and the moment your eyes drift away from the camera.

Step 6: Repeat only the weak answers

Don't run the whole interview again. Take the two or three answers that scored lowest, say each one out loud three times, then ask the AI to ask the same question in different words. Real interviewers rarely phrase questions the way your notes do.

How AI interviews work

One-way video interviews

On platforms like HireVue and Spark Hire, nobody is on the other end. A question appears on screen, you get some time to think and then you record your answer. The employer sets the rules: how much thinking time you get, how long each answer can be and whether you can re-record. Read the instructions before you click start, because some interviews give you no retakes at all.

HireVue's own candidate tips say most on-demand interviews give you just a few minutes per answer and that you'll get a practice question. Use it to check your camera, your sound and your timing.

What does the software look at? HireVue stopped using facial expressions in its assessments in 2020, and its chief data scientist told Fortune that the content of a candidate's answers was the most important factor in predicting success. In other words, what you say counts far more than your facial expressions. Whether a person also watches your recording depends on the employer.

Live AI interviewers

Some companies use an AI voice for the first screening call. It asks questions, listens and responds, much like a recruiter on a phone screen (Bloomberg covered this trend in 2025). Prepare the same way you would for a phone screen with a person.

How to prepare for an AI interview

  • Prepare like it's a normal interview. The questions are the usual ones: tell me about yourself, why this role, a time you handled a conflict. Your STAR stories work here too.

  • Use the words from the job description. If the posting says "stakeholder management" and you've done exactly that, say those words. Software that reviews your answers can only credit what you actually say.

  • Answer first, then explain. Start with one sentence that answers the question, then give the example. If the timer cuts you off, your main point is already in.

  • Aim for one to two minutes per answer. That's long enough for a STAR story and short enough to stay focused. Practice with a timer.
  • AI video interview tips

  • Light in front of you, not behind you. HireVue's tips point out that light from behind makes it hard to see you.

  • Look at the camera, not at your own face. A sticky note next to the lens helps.

  • Camera at eye level. Put a few books under your laptop.

  • Quiet room, strong Wi-Fi. A dropped connection in a one-way interview can cost you an answer.

  • Keep notes to a few keywords. Reading full sentences off the screen is easy to spot on video.

  • Dress like it's a call with the hiring manager. Your recording may well end up in front of one.
  • Know your rights

    Two US rules worth knowing:

  • Illinois. If the job is based in Illinois and the employer uses AI to analyze video interviews, the Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act requires them to tell you before the interview, explain how the AI works and what it looks for, and get your consent. You can also ask them to delete your video, and they have 30 days to do it.

  • New York City. Under Local Law 144, an employer using an automated tool to screen candidates must have had a bias audit done on it within the past year and must notify candidates at least 10 business days before using it.
  • How to pick the best AI interview prep app

Search for "best AI interview prep app" and you'll find dozens of rankings, often written by the companies that sell the apps. Check these things instead:

  • Voice, not just text. You need to practice speaking.

  • Follow-up questions. Anyone can list standard questions. Follow-ups are what real interviewers do.

  • Feedback you can act on. "Be more specific" doesn't help. "Add the result of the project as a number" does.

  • It uses your resume. Generic sample answers won't help in your interview.

  • Clear privacy terms. You're uploading your resume and recordings of your voice. Check where they go.

  • A free way to start. Try it before you pay.
  • Help during the real interview: Hinty Voice Assistant

Practice gets you most of the way, but your mind can still go blank on a question you prepared for. Hinty Voice Assistant is built for that moment in live calls on Google Meet, Zoom or Teams in your browser. It hears the interviewer's question and shows you a short answer in one to two seconds, based on your own documents if you upload them, like your resume, notes or a PDF. If English isn't your first language, translator mode lets the call run in English while your hints show up in your own language.

Right after you sign up, you can run a free practice conversation and see what the hints look like before a real interview. One note: Hinty works in live calls on Meet, Zoom and Teams, so it isn't meant for one-way recorded interviews.

    FAQ

    Is AI interview practice free?

It can be. Any general chatbot can run a mock interview with the prompts above, and ChatGPT's voice mode is available on a free account with usage limits. Dedicated prep apps add more structure, but the free setup covers the basics.

How do I prepare for an AI interview?

Prepare four or five STAR stories, use the language from the job description, answer the question in your first sentence and practice out loud with a timer. For one-way video interviews, also test your light, camera and Wi-Fi.

How long should my answers be in an AI video interview?

Aim for one to two minutes, and check the time limit the employer set before you start.

    Does HireVue analyze your face?

HireVue stopped using facial expressions in its assessments in 2020 and has said the content of your answers matters most. Focus on what you say, not on how your face looks while you say it.

What is the best AI interview prep app?

The one that makes you speak out loud, asks follow-up questions, gives specific feedback and uses your own resume. Many people get most of that from a free chatbot with a good prompt.

Can I use ChatGPT for interview practice?

Yes. Paste the job description and your resume, ask it to interview you one question at a time, answer out loud and ask for a scored review at the end.
